1883: Foundation of Schulte & Bruns by Johann Hermann Schulte and Christopher Burns. - carry dry and wet bulk cargo, containers. Started as a ship broker and agency. Burns steps out of the company after 10 years. In the beginning of 1900, Schulte bought 12 sailing vessels. Around 1939, the fleet was build out to 36 seagoing vessels. After WO II the company has to start all over again and in 1955 the fleet consist of 16 ships. In 1967 Thomas Schulte joined the company. In 1972 the Hanseatic Shipping Co. was set up. Thomas Schulte left the company and start up his own company in 1987, reederei Thomas Schulte. In 1996 the Bernard Schulte Group take over the Oldenburg-Portugiesische Dampfschiffs - Rhederei (OPDR). |

Arise from the merger of the Hamburg Amerikanische Packetfahrt Actien
Gesellschaft (Hapag) and the Norddeutscher Lloyd (NDL). - carry containers In 1847 becomes Adolph Godeffroy the first director of Hapag and has to set up a faster and more reliable service between Hamburg and New York. The weekly sailings , quick passage and the transport of the German mail, gifs the Hapag a lead over there competitors like the NDL. Forced by economic reasons, Hapag and the NDL hire together in 1862 a piece of ground in New York to build piers and passenger facilities. In 1899, both companies start working closer with each other. Between 1900 and 1950 Hapag faces ups and downs. Especially after WO II, when it was not allowed for the Germans to sail around the seas After rebuilding the company the Hapag and NDL merger in 1970 to Hapag Lloyd AG. In 1974 Hapag start the trade to China again in co-operation with Rickmers and becomes a 100 % shareholder of Rickmers in 1986. Rickmers obtain al shares in 2000 and brings the company back under family flag. Due to the economic crisis in 2008 / 2009, a part of Hapag fall into the hands of a consortium. |
